50% of UK businesses 'are leaving data at risk' - ITPRO

"Our research shows that almost four million UK businesses are vulnerable to data loss from single events and could potentially become unable to operate"

Sonia Blizzard, Beaming's Managing Director

In 2018, Internet provider “Beaming” conducted a study of 514 UK businesses and found that companies are still failing to follow best practices when it comes to protecting their data against hardware failure and/or cyber attack.

The 2018 survey showed that 17% of all respondents did not back up their business data at all. This figure was dominated by smaller businesses of less than 10 people. The figure for medium businesses of between 50 and 249 employees was much lower at 2%.

However, with nearly 50% of survey respondents saying their backups were kept elsewhere in the same building, there is still clearly a huge problem with many companies disaster recovery plans. Scaling these numbers up highlights that around 4 million UK businesses are not following best practices.

Fast forward to 2021 and the UK is emerging from lockdown(hopefully for the last time). With so many people working from home(including IT teams) how have businesses managed their data and backups?

There are a number of risks to having so many people away from the office. Traditional tape/disk backups that previously left site every day have most likely in many cases not left site at all or the backup has failed.

Those with a more sophisticated backup strategy may have faired better, but many laptops are being used at home with no backup at all leaving them vulnerable to malware and ransomware attacks, data corruption risks, accidental deletion, hardware failure, viruses, theft and liquid ingress(yes it still happens to laptops).
